Winter Fires

We grew up in Holland with our clogs. Frans and I both had a pair of clogs when we arrived in New Zealand 30 years ago.

During those times they were great to wear in the veggie garden due to the fact that they would not let you sink in the mud when it’s wet and slippery.

This weekend Frans found another good way to wear them. During the summer and autumn months we had collected a huge pile of branches and garden remnants which we wanted to burn on a frosty day.

Saturday turned out to be the perfect day for it. We began early in the morning when it was nice and cold and started the bonfire to warm us up pretty quickly.

After the bonfire had died down, it was time to attend to the hot spots. And that’s where the clogs came in.

You would think that they would burn through due to the heat, but strangely enough this was not the case. We have gone through gumboots and work boots on occasions like these but the clogs proved their worth.

After raking all the hotspots there was still plenty of time for a cuppa and to sit back and enjoy the evening.
