Worry-free Gardening

Planting veggies

It’s a great feeling to be able to put food on the table from our own veggie garden. It seems this year we’ve become much more organised and Frans has come up with a clever concept to grow lots of different vegetables in the tunnel house.

But because we’re both busy, we don’t want to be checking the tunnel house everyday. So Frans put together some troughs for the tomatoes, eggplants, cucumber, basil and capsicums.

What you’ll need:

  • long strips of black plastic
  • foam underlay
  • some straps
  • stakes
  • string

First put the long strip of foam down as an underlay. Then put long strips of black plastic over top of the foam.

You can now start placing the pots along the middle on the strip and pull everything up alongside the pots so that the trough can hold water.

This enables the plants to suck up the water from the trough which is important as the tunnel house can reach temperature of up to 40 degrees Celsius.

To make best use of the tunnel house we have staked all the plants so that they are close together.

We leave the top window open day and night so the busy bee pollinators can do their job. This looks to be working really well so far, especially with all the hot weather.

As I write this, we are enjoying our first batch of homegrown cucumbers and the tomatoes are not far away!
