As the Train Rolls By

Train

I remember growing up with a brother who loved trains. When he was really young he had plastic train sets and when he got a bit older he started to buy the more expensive ones which were exact replicas of the trains used in Holland.

I loved watching him getting the train set out of the box and displaying it in his bedroom. They looked so real.

Here at Thyme Out we get the real thing. Three to four times a day we’ll see the KiwiRail trains pass by in the distance carrying a diverse range of cargo.

I was surprised to learn that KiwiRail is one of New Zealand’s largest transport industries and employs 4100 staff in different locations across the country. It is great to see them coming through on a regular basis, working hard to shift freight from A to B.

On Friday mornings we are sometimes lucky enough to see the passenger carriages and think about how travelling by train is such a fantastic way to see the diverse landscapes of New Zealand.

Plus for all the commuters out there, it is a chance to read a book, catch up on some much-needed sleep or just enjoy the ride!
