Getting Ready for Spring
- 04
- Aug
The daffodils are here, giving us an early indication that the days are getting longer and spring is near.
Frans is busy mowing the lawn and reflecting over the gate what he will be doing next. It’s lovely to have a place to reflect and to put some ideas together for the future.
All the rose pruning has been done and the new buds are already starting to appear. The camellias are showing their beautiful heads in an array of different colours.
The cold still lingers on some mornings and afternoons but now that it is the beginning of August, we are heading in the right direction.
This week I will start sowing the new vegetable seeds in the seed trays of our tunnel house. This year I want to get started in time to make sure the vegetable garden is in full glory this summer.
A trip to the local hardware store for the necessary seed and potting mix and it will be great to start the cycle of growing our own veggies again.
Seed sowing tips:
- Make sure that you only sow seeds that don’t mind starting off indoors
- Root crops don’t like starting inside, they will grow well initially but they transplant badly
- Crops with leaves are the easiest to grow e.g. spinach, brassicas and lettuce
