A Tribute to the Handyman

Dabbling in furniture restoration

I have decided to dedicate this blog to my handyman Frans.

I must admit that, while I do quite a few things around the place, most of the really heavy stuff is delegated to my hubby Frans.

Not that I haven’t tried my hand at some of the bigger jobs, such as erecting walls and pruning big branches, it’s just that I’ve failed miserably every time.

Over the years we’ve both accepted that each one of us has an important role to play and that together we work well as a team.

To keep the peace, we try not to mix our areas of expertise too much.

Getting down to business

As a result, things in and around the Thyme Out Estate have been improving in record time.

While it takes a certain amount of planning to get great results, it also requires a healthy dose of the old “let’s give it a go” attitude.

Either way, it’s rewarding to see a particular vision come to reality.

When Frans took to restoring the old doors to their original timber at the pace of one door per weekend, it showed me the kind of patience he has that I will never have.

Recently, he also sunk his teeth into building a replacement for the wooden sign on the roadside.

Admiring his handiwork

In a matter of days, we had a big new green one out front so that people no longer end up in Halcombe when they head over to our place.

(If the sign meets your approval, feel free to give us a toot while you’re driving by!)

So let’s take the time to celebrate the handymen and women of this world who, due to their patience and diligence, can make something out of nothing.

Why don’t we nominate one day of the year and make it a public holiday to reward them for all their hard work?

I would be all for it!
